About Brian
Brian Eggert founded Deep Focus Review in 2007 as an independent film criticism website dedicated to in-depth analysis of cinema. The idea for the site emerged while he was in college at the University of Minnesota, where he initially began writing about movies on a generic blog. However, he found the platform too informal for the level of professional criticism he aimed to produce. Eggert soon launched Deep Focus Review as a more structured, independent publication.
The name "Deep Focus Review" is inspired by the filmmaking technique of deep focus, which keeps the foreground, middle ground, and background in sharp clarity. This approach explains Eggert’s critical philosophy—examining films from multiple angles, incorporating plot analysis, stylistic evaluation, historical context, and broader cultural significance. His reviews often blend traditional critique with film theory and history, making his work a hybrid of journalistic reviews and critical analyses.
Beyond writing, Eggert has expanded his presence as a film critic by becoming a Tomatometer-approved reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes. He is an award-winning critic, with the Independent Film Critics of America naming Eggert the 2024 Critic of the Year. He is also a member of several film critic and cinema studies associations and regularly appears on KARE 11, Minnesota's NBC affiliate, to provide film recommendations and insights into new releases.
Eggert’s primary goal with Deep Focus Review is to encourage audiences to think critically about cinema. He hopes his readers not only discover new films but also gain fresh perspectives on familiar ones. By offering well-researched and thought-provoking analysis, Eggert strives to bridge the gap between entertainment and scholarship, making film criticism both accessible and enriching for a wide audience.
