About Carl
Carl Johnson is a prominent photographic businessman residing in Anchorage, Alaska. He moved to Alaska in 1999 as a fresh University of Minnesota Law School graduate and embarked on a 20-year law and policy career between private practice and federal government. During that whole time, he also built up his photography career.
In 2019, Carl transitioned full time to being a photographic business owner with the purchase of Alaska Photo Treks, one of Alaska's top-rated photo tour companies. He has grown the business tremendously in five years, and earned the Tour Operator of the Year award issued by Visit Anchorage in 2023. It was that same year that he and his wife, Michelle, took over ownership of Greatland Graphics, a prominent publishing business. They expect to also open a store in downtown Anchorage within the next year.
Carl has been the artist-in-residence for four national parks, was the “Environmental Issues” winner for the Windland Smith Rice International Awards in 2010 and was awarded the Daniel Housberg Wilderness Image Award for Excellence in Still Photography, Film, or Video by the Alaska Conservation Foundation. His book, "Where Water is Gold: Life and Livelihood in Alaska's Bristol Bay," was awarded a Silver Medal in the Nautilus Book Awards and a Gold Medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards. Carl is an Associate Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers and serves on the Board of Directors for Visit Anchorage and the Alaska Society of Outdoor and Nature Photographers. In the summers, Carl also works as a guest lecturer for Princess Cruise Lines, and has been a lecturer for Tony Robbins and several remote Alaska wilderness lodges.
